Recently, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin emphasized the cooperative efforts within the Ethereum ecosystem, highlighting the fact that developers are deeply focused on fostering cross-chain compatibility. Buterin’s comments come in light in response to a fresh proposal for the “ICrosschainERC20” interface, which was posted to Optimism’s GitHub page with the goal of encouraging communication between Ethereum Layer 2 (L2) networks.
In a tweet shared on October 5, 2024, Buterin drew attention to the potential of a new proposal on the Optimism platform, which aims to introduce a redesigned SuperchainERC20 interface. This upgrade, as per the pull request titled “feat: introduce SuperchainERC20 redesign ICrosschainERC20 #12321,” focuses on migrating key functionalities of the SuperchainERC20 standard into a more cross-chain friendly format.
Buterin believes that the wider Ethereum community might be overlooking the extent to which Ethereum’s infrastructure players are willing to collaborate for the greater good of the ecosystem.

The main feature of this new interface, ICrosschainERC20, is to enable seamless minting and burning of ERC20 tokens across different Layer 2 solutions, making the process cross-chain neutral and extensible to other L2 platforms.
The proposed changes are designed to improve upon the existing sendERC20 and relayERC20 functions, which are essential for enabling tokens to be transferred between different L2s. By adopting this new standard, Ethereum developers aim to ensure greater fluidity between L2 solutions, reducing fragmentation and making it easier for decentralized applications (dApps) and users to move assets freely across platforms.
The proposal is currently open for discussion on the Optimism GitHub, where developers and stakeholders are encouraged to contribute.
