US District Judge Cracks Down on $1M SIM Swap Crypto Scandal

The U.S. District Judge Diane J. Humetewa has sentenced 20-year-old Jordan Dave Persad from Orlando, Florida, to a 30-month jail term. The sentencing follows his guilty plea to Conspiracy to Commit Computer Fraud, stemming from his involvement in a SIM-swapping crypto fraud scheme. Besides his jail time, Persad must also pay $945,833 in restitution.

The Fight Against SIM Swap Fraud

Persad, in collaboration with other malicious actors, exploited unsuspecting victims by hacking into their email accounts and hijacking their cell phone numbers. This unauthorized access allowed them to infiltrate the victims’ cryptocurrency wallets in a fraud technique known as SIM swapping. Consequently, Persad and his accomplices managed to siphon up to $1 million worth of digital assets from numerous victims, leaving one Arizona resident $30,000 out of pocket. Persad’s share of the ill-gotten gains amounted to a staggering $475,000.

In response to this fraudulent activity, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) launched a comprehensive investigation. The agency conducted a thorough search of Persad’s Orlando residence, successfully recovering a portion of the stolen funds. Following his immediate incarceration, Persad will undergo three years of supervised release.

Cracking Down on Crypto Fraud

The digital asset ecosystem has witnessed a surge in crypto fraud incidents over recent months despite the prevailing bear market conditions. However, law enforcement agencies are making significant strides in apprehending those responsible.

Crypto scams are like the hydra of the digital age, chop one head off and another one pops up. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in India took down a guy named Ramavat Shaishav who's been impersonating a Fraud Department official from a Multinational Company. That's one…

Less than a week ago, India’s Central Bureau of Investigation arrested Ramavat Shaishav, also known as James Carlson, concerning a separate crypto fraud case. A raid on his Ahmedabad apartment resulted in the recovery of $930,000 in assets, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, and USDT.

Moreover, the Navi Mumbai police successfully dismantled a $3.92 million crypto fraud operation following a detailed investigation prompted by a First Information Report. These cases highlight the ongoing efforts of law enforcement worldwide to safeguard the integrity of the digital asset space and bring fraudsters to justice.
