Elliptic Analysis Unerths 'Sinbad' as rebrand of Blender Mixer?

On Monday, the digital currency evaluator Elliptic alerted that crypto mixer Blender has already re-launched as Sinbad. Blender was the Bitcoin mixer that shut down its operations in April 2022.

🌪️ Blender is back! Elliptic research found that a coin mixer sanctioned for helping Lazarus Group launder tens of millions of dollars is likely to have re-launched as Sinbad and has laundered close to $100m in Bitcoin from hacks attributed to Lazarushttps://t.co/qSUPwIgPpq

Elliptic Reports that the way in which the Sinbad mixer operates is identical to Blender in several ways. including ten-digit mixer codes, guarantee letters signed by the service address, and a maximum seven-day transaction delay.

The on-chain pattern of behavior is very similar for both mixers, including the specific characteristics of transactions, and the use of other services to obfuscate their transactions.

Researcher Elliptic showed concern that “Blender is Back” was sectioned in 2022 by the U.S. Treasury Department for favouring the North Korean hacker group Lazarus. They explained that the Sinbad could be the re-structured laundry tool of ‘Blander.’

Criminals mostly use crypto mixer platforms as it enables people to send or receive crypto like BTC and ETH secretly. Also, it hides the source and destination and helps to launder money.

The Tornado and Sindbad was the vital laundering tool used by crypto theft from another cross-chain bridge – Horizon. In addition, Sinbad was also involved in a major crypto heist in June 2022, where $100 million worth of crypto disappeared from the market. Hence, Elliptic indicates that the Lazarus group is now utilising the Sindbad in money laundering.

Lazarus group has successfully made seven huge heists, including Axie infinity’s cross-chain hack. Thus, Elliptic said, the “on chain pattern of behaviour” and “structure of both services’ website” appears the same for both crypto mixers. In Particular, they are both linked to Russia.

Blender was used by North Korean hackers last year to “support its malicious cyber operations and money-laundering of stolen virtual currency,” as per OFAC (U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control) . Sinbad has been engaged since the app’s termination in April 2022.
