DogeOS has launched a public testnet designed to bring Ethereum-compatible smart contracts, decentralized finance and consumer applications to Dogecoin, giving DOGE holders more ways to use the cryptocurrency beyond payments and speculation.
The application layer went live on September 30, providing developers with an EVM-compatible environment where they can build and test applications using DOGE for transaction fees. The network is designed to support trading, lending, stablecoins, prediction markets, games, and other consumer applications.
DogeOS was created by the team behind MyDoge and adds new apps to Dogecoin without changing its main blockchain.
EVM Apps come to Dogecoin
Dogecoin was originally designed mainly for transferring DOGE between wallets and does not natively support complex applications such as decentralized exchanges or lending protocols.
DogeOS aims to address that limitation through a separate application layer built as a zero-knowledge rollup that settles its state to the Dogecoin network. Developers familiar with Ethereum-compatible infrastructure can use similar tools to build applications on the testnet.
Several projects are already working on the ecosystem. Barkswap is developing a liquidity engine, while Superposition Finance is building a Dogecoin lending protocol. Derps is working on a perpetual exchange, Split Markets on options, and USDoge on a collateral-backed stablecoin.
Snag is developing a prediction-market aggregator, while Anoncoin and Starbase are building launchpads. Doge Escape, PlaysOut and DogeFundMe are among the projects working on games and consumer applications.
Following the announcement, Dogecoin (DOGE) was trading at around $0.09575 at 06:15 AM UTC, up 1.8% over the past 24 hours, with a market capitalization of about $14.95 billion, according to CoinGecko data.
Miners may verify proofs
DogeOS does not currently rely directly on Dogecoin miners to secure its applications. The testnet uses a permissioned sequencer to determine transaction order, along with validators and a trusted execution environment. State transitions require valid proofs as well as signatures from a majority of validators and a TEE signer.
DogeOS plans to eventually connect the application’s security more closely to Dogecoin itself through a proposed Dogecoin Core upgrade called OP_CHECKZKP.
The upgrade would allow Dogecoin nodes to verify zero-knowledge proofs showing that calculations performed on the application layer were completed correctly.
The proposal was published in July 2025, while a separate implementation submitted later remains a draft with a placeholder proof checker. There is currently no activation date for the upgrade.
Until such a change is implemented, users will continue to rely on DogeOS’s operators, validators and trusted hardware rather than direct verification by Dogecoin miners.
Dogecoin Foundation backs DogeOS
Timothy Stebbing, a director of the Dogecoin Foundation, backed DogeOS as a way to add utility while keeping Dogecoin’s base layer unchanged. Stebbing said he hopes DogeOS will become a springboard for more developers and startups to build on Dogecoin. He said the project provides a way to introduce smart-contract functionality one layer above the Dogecoin network while preserving the simplicity of its base ledger.
DogeOS founder and CEO Jordan Jefferson said the testnet gives developers a place to turn Dogecoin-related ideas into working applications. DogeOS announced a $6.9 million funding round led by Polychain Capital in May 2025.
Earlier efforts struggled
DogeOS follows earlier attempts to build application ecosystems around meme-based cryptocurrencies.
Dogechain was launched in 2022 as a community-built project offering NFTs, games and DeFi services for Dogecoin users. However, it was not an official project of the Dogecoin Foundation or Dogecoin founders Jackson Palmer and Billy Markus. Despite being promoted as a Dogecoin layer-2, Dogechain was actually a separate blockchain based on Polygon Edge and compatible with Ethereum applications.
Shibarium, launched by the Shiba Inu ecosystem in 2023, similarly sought to support financial applications and games. Its tracked DeFi deposits have also declined significantly from earlier levels, according to DeFiLlama data cited by CoinDesk.
DogeOS has received support from the Dogecoin Foundation, which has presented the project as a way to add applications without altering Dogecoin’s underlying ledger.
Mainnet date remains unknown
DogeOS is currently focused on testing its infrastructure and giving developers time to build applications. The project has not announced a mainnet launch date.
The longer-term security model will depend partly on whether Dogecoin adopts native zero-knowledge-proof verification.
For now, DogeOS is positioning the testnet as an early step toward expanding Dogecoin from a network primarily used for transfers into an ecosystem supporting DeFi, stablecoins, games and other applications.
