Polymarket is paying LeBron James roughly four times what the Philadelphia 76ers are. The more revealing detail is what he is not allowed to promote.
The campaign covers football. James is an active NBA player, and league rules bar players from promoting event contracts tied to NBA games — so a basketball star has been signed to sell football markets.
Front Office Sports reported on September 16, citing sources familiar with the agreement, that the platform is paying James $15 million a year under the partnership he teased on September 5.
Endorser, Not Investor
One source told the outlet James holds no equity in Polymarket and is purely an endorser. That distinction matters, because several athletes in this market have taken the other route — Giannis Antetokounmpo, Kyle Kuzma and Breanna Stewart are reported investors in Kalshi, and Saquon Barkley in Polymarket.
The term of the agreement is unclear. One source described it as an ongoing engagement with multiple deliverables including social media posts and other content.
James will earn $3,876,529 from the 76ers during the 2026-27 season under the two-year, $8 million veteran-minimum contract he signed in July. The Polymarket figure is roughly 3.9 times that. Neither party has confirmed the terms.
Why Football
The NBA does not prohibit players from endorsing prediction market platforms. It does bar them from promoting contracts tied to NBA games, which mirrors how the league treats conventional sports betting.
That constraint shapes the entire campaign. James can front Polymarket’s football push without touching his own sport, and his previous DraftKings deal, signed in 2024 and expired this summer, was structured the same way.
The NFL and PGA Tour reportedly prohibit such deals outright, which is why the football campaign runs through a basketball player rather than a football one.
The League Map
Polymarket holds league-level agreements with MLB, the NHL, MLS, Serie A and LaLiga, plus team deals with the New York Rangers and Yankees. It is MLB’s exclusive prediction-market partner.
Kalshi is also an official NHL partner, since Polymarket’s arrangement is not exclusive, and holds team deals with the Blackhawks, Giants, Braves, Dodgers, Red Sox and Padres. It counts as an authorized prediction market under MLB’s integrity framework.
The two leagues absent from that map are the NBA and NFL. Sources told Front Office Sports the NBA is close to agreements while the NFL remains a holdout — which is the context for a deal that routes an NBA player into football markets.
What Polymarket Is Buying
The commercial James teased also featured Derek Jeter and Eli Manning, both on smaller endorsement deals according to one source, alongside Spike Lee, Reggie Bush and Alexandra Daddario. Some of those were reportedly paid once for the commercial rather than under continuing agreements.
The spending arrives as the legal position remains unsettled. Connecticut ordered Polymarket, Kalshi and Robinhood to stop offering sports event contracts in December, Kentucky’s attorney general sued Polymarket and Kalshi in June, and Coinbase has challenged three states over the same question. Whether these contracts are federally regulated derivatives or state-licensed gambling is expected to reach the Supreme Court.
The contrast is sharper abroad. The Crypto Times reported on Thursday that South Korean police have referred 18 Polymarket users to prosecutors over alleged illegal gambling, having identified them through public blockchain records. The platform signing $15 million endorsements in the United States is one whose users face criminal referral in Korea.
