Nigel Farage Questions Impartiality of £5M Crypto-Linked Payment Inquiry

Key Highlights

  • Nigel Farage has questioned the impartiality of the parliamentary inquiry into a £5 million payment linked to crypto investor Christopher Harborne.
  • Farage says the money was intended for private security rather than political activity.
  • The Commons Standards Committee is examining whether the payment should have been declared under parliamentary rules.

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has questioned the impartiality of a parliamentary inquiry examining whether a £5 million payment linked to cryptocurrency investor Christopher Harborne should have been declared.

According to a report by The Independent, the investigation has continued after Farage returned to Parliament as MP for Clacton. Farage has argued that the payment was intended to cover private security costs and should not be treated as a political donation.

Speaking to the BBC, Farage questioned whether he could receive a fair hearing from the Commons Standards Committee, pointing to its political composition.

“Have you seen who is on the committee? I think we know the outcome already.”

Farage raises concerns over committee membership

Farage said he was uncomfortable with MPs from political parties that compete against Reform UK being involved in decisions concerning his conduct.

“I do think you will be judged by members of parliament of other political parties who you’re fighting against in by-elections or general elections, I think that raises the question.”

He said standards cases should ideally be assessed by people who are independent of party politics.

The Standards Committee has 14 members, comprising seven MPs and seven independent lay members. The parliamentary members come from Labour, the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats.

Reform UK does not have a representative on the committee.

Inquiry centres on £5M payment

The investigation concerns a £5 million payment from Christopher Harborne, a cryptocurrency investor and businessman.

The payment was made before Farage became an MP in July 2024. The inquiry is examining whether it should have been registered under parliamentary rules.

Farage has disputed that interpretation, saying the money was a personal contribution intended to pay for private security rather than a political donation.

The question of whether the payment should have been declared remains for the parliamentary standards process to determine.

Farage previously took dispute to Clacton voters

Farage previously linked the issue to his decision to contest a by-election in Clacton.

At the time, he argued that taking the dispute to voters would allow residents to make their own judgment about his position.

“I will let the people of Clacton, the voters, be the judge.”

Farage won the by-election and returned to the Commons, but the result did not bring the standards investigation to an end.

Harman warns against undermining inquiry

Former Labour deputy leader Harriet Harman, who previously chaired the parliamentary inquiry into Boris Johnson’s conduct during the Partygate investigation, told The Independent that Farage’s approach could affect the eventual handling of the case.

Harman argued that Farage could potentially resolve the matter by accepting the finding and registering the donation if the committee determines that it should have been declared.

“If Mr Farage were to simply apologise and register the donation then that would probably be an end to the matter.”

She also warned that repeatedly challenging the legitimacy of the process could result in a more serious sanction.

Her comments do not determine what action the committee will take. Any sanction would depend on the committee’s findings and subsequent parliamentary decisions.

Previous scrutiny of the donation

The £5 million payment has previously drawn political scrutiny, including questions from UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer about Farage’s explanation for the funds.

Farage has maintained that the money was intended for private security rather than political activity.

The parliamentary investigation is focused on whether the payment should have been declared under the relevant rules. No final finding has been issued.

Clacton seat could face another by-election

The inquiry could have consequences beyond the question of whether the payment breached parliamentary rules.

If Farage were eventually suspended for more than 10 sitting days, the sanction could trigger a recall petition in Clacton under the relevant parliamentary rules.

That would potentially put his Commons seat back before voters after his previous successful election campaign.

The committee has not issued a final finding in the case.

For now, the central issue remains whether the £5 million payment should have been declared. Farage’s latest comments have instead shifted attention toward the composition and impartiality of the parliamentary process handling the inquiry.
