IREN Limited shares rose about 6% on Friday, August 21, as the stock recovered from an intraday low below $40. The Bitcoin mining and AI infrastructure company climbed close to $46 before pulling back to around $44.33, as investors returned to the stock following a strong run in August.
According to data from Yahoo Finance, the price increase also pushed its market capitalization to around $16.14 billion in value with its current daily average volume sitting at around 45 million shares.

Why is IREN stock surging?
Investors seem to be reacting to the development that happened recently when the firm announced an important update that Microsoft had accepted its first Horizon data center. At the time, investors didn’t really react much to the news.
In fact, on August 19, IREN dropped 6.46%, closing at $42.00. The Crypto Times reported that the stock then slipped another 1.83% to about $41.23 in overnight trading.
Microsoft accepts IREN’s first horizon data center
The Horizon 1 project is a 50MW data center at IREN’s Childress, Texas campus. It is the first of four planned 50MW deployments that will make up a 200MW buildout. The project is part of IREN’s five-year, $9.7 billion agreement with Microsoft, which runs through 2031.
The milestone is important because IREN is trying to build a bigger business around AI computing. The company started mainly as a Bitcoin mining business, but it is now using some of its power and data center sites to support AI workloads. That change has become a major part of IREN’s stock story in August.
New AI Cloud contracts boost IREN’s growth
Moreover, investors are also still reacting to the development from July 20 when the company announced $2.8 billion in new multi-year AI Cloud contracts. It also raised its year-end 2026 AI Cloud annualized revenue target from $3.7 billion to more than $4 billion. IREN said about 85% of the target was backed by signed contracts.
The company added another piece to its AI business on August 4 when it completed its acquisition of cloud software company Mirantis. IREN issued about 12.6 million ordinary shares for the deal, along with about $40 million in cash, restricted stock units and other considerations. Mirantis brings software that helps customers manage, monitor and support AI workloads.
AI peers help drive IREN’s August rally
IREN’s shares also jumped 9.86% on August 12, closing at $43.67 as investors reacted to strong results from AI infrastructure companies CoreWeave and Nebius. CoreWeave reported $2.58 billion in second-quarter revenue, while Nebius reported $582.3 million in revenue and $236.2 million in adjusted EBITDA.
The next day, IREN reached $49.19 after Microsoft accepted Horizon 1. IREN also said its NVIDIA GB300 NVL72 deployment had received NVIDIA Exemplar Cloud status following testing. The stock later gave back much of the gain, with more than 71 million shares traded.
IREN stock remains between support and resistance levels
Since then, the price has been ranging. It even reached a weekly low of $39.55 before the current surge, looking for a possible breakout.
The 4 hour chart shows this range clearly. It aligns with the price current resistance and support between $49.71, and $39.22. IREN entered this range after its recent rally from $28.64 as of the end of July to August 10.

However, current price action shows that price is still looking for momentum to break out of this range. A break above the resistance could propel the price up $62 where the next resistance level is. If not, IREN could fall, with sellers pulling the price to the previous support level at $35.
Moreover, the Relative Strength Index (RSI) is currently at 40, which suggests that sellers are in control of the market despite the brief surge.
