Solana Cuts Slot Time to 350ms as Network Targets 300ms

The change lowers the time between blocks from its original 400ms target, with Solana now aiming for 300ms as the next step.

Solana Cuts Slot Time to 350ms as Network Targets 300ms

Key Highlights

  • Solana has reduced its network slot time to 350ms, marking the first step in its planned move toward faster block production.
  • The network plans to cut slot times further to 300ms, 250ms and eventually 200ms, with each stage tested before the next reduction.
  • Shorter slot times could reduce network delays and speed up confirmations, while also making Solana’s epochs shorter.

Solana, a popular blockchain known for fast and low-cost transactions, reduced its network slot time to 350 milliseconds, making the blockchain faster as it begins a planned move toward 300ms and eventually 200ms.

Jacob Creech, vice president of technology at the Solana Foundation, announced the change in an X post on August 21, saying Solana had entered “a new era of 350ms” before adding, “Next stop, 300ms.”

Solana has officially reduced its slot time for the first time since its inception

The change is part of SIMD-0525, a Solana improvement proposal that defines the staged reduction from 400ms to 200ms. Solana will reduce the slot time in four steps: 350ms, 300ms, 250ms and finally 200ms. Each step gives validators and developers time to test the network before the next cut.

What a 350ms slot means

A slot is simply the short period given to a validator to produce blocks on Solana. When that period becomes shorter, validators get new block-production opportunities more often. In simple terms, the network does not have to wait as long before moving to the next slot.

Before the latest change, Solana’s original slot-time target was 400ms, although its slot-time explorer showed average times of about 360ms when the latest update was reported. The move to 350ms therefore marks the first official step in the new rollout.

Faster slots could speed up confirmations

The Solana Foundation previously said in June that cutting slot times from 400ms to 200ms is meant to lower network delays and help confirmations reach users faster. This could matter for applications that need to know what is happening on the blockchain as quickly as possible.

The first cut also changes the time a leader has to produce blocks. Solana uses a four-slot leader window. At 400ms, those four slots give a leader about 1.6 seconds. With the new 350ms setting, that time drops to 1.4 seconds. If Solana reaches 300ms, it will fall again to 1.2 seconds.

The change will also make Solana’s epochs shorter. An epoch is a fixed period made up of 432,000 slots. Because Solana plans to keep the same number of slots in each epoch, faster slots mean the whole period ends sooner. At 400ms, an epoch lasts about 48 hours. At 350ms, it falls to around 42 hours, while 300ms would bring it to about 36 hours. At the final 200ms target, an epoch would last roughly 24 hours.

Faster does not mean double the work

Importantly, faster slots do not mean Solana will simply double the amount of work it handles. SIMD-0525 also lowers the number of compute units allowed in each slot as the timing gets shorter. The proposal says this is meant to keep processing demands from rising simply because more slots are being created.

The proposal also points to faster updates for applications such as oracles and automated market makers. These systems can depend on how fresh blockchain data is, so shorter gaps between slots can help them work with newer information.

The 350ms change is only one part of Solana’s wider network upgrades. Alpenglow, a separate consensus project, is being tested and aims to bring transaction finality to about 150ms. Solana has also added more validator software options, including Firedancer, as developers work on the network’s infrastructure.

300ms Is Solana’s next stop

For now, 350ms is the latest step. Creech has already pointed to 300ms as the next stop, while the remaining reductions to 250ms and 200ms will depend on testing and future feature activations.
