Trump Discusses Crypto Legislation, Family Ties and China Competition
Donald Trump, 45th and 47th U.S. President

Key Highlights

  • Donald Trump said he is open to placing relevant business interests in a blind trust amid congressional discussions over ethics restrictions on his family’s cryptocurrency activities.
  • Trump described crypto as strategically important to the U.S., warning that China could take the lead if America fails to maintain its position.
  • His comments come as Congress considers digital asset legislation, including the CLARITY Act, while lawmakers debate ethics rules and the broader role of crypto in U.S. economic and technological competition.

US President Donald Trump addressed ongoing congressional discussions regarding cryptocurrency legislation and proposed ethics restrictions related to his family’s business activities.

In an exclusive interview with Punchbowl News on August 7, Trump noted that Congress is currently examining a significant cryptocurrency measure. He stated that Democrats are seeking to impose ethics restrictions that would limit his ability, and that of his family, to conduct cryptocurrency business while he holds office. Trump responded by referencing former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, saying no comparable restrictions were applied to her.

He indicated openness to placing relevant interests in a blind trust. Trump said he does not personally manage the businesses and that his children handle them. He added that he does not discuss government matters with them and limits conversations primarily to personal expressions of support.

Views on cryptocurrency importance

Trump described cryptocurrency as very important, stating that if the United States does not maintain a strong position, China will. He said other countries, including Japan, also seek to develop in the area, but that the United States currently dominates.

Trump attributed part of his earlier engagement with cryptocurrency to political considerations, noting support among a large number of people worldwide. He claimed that former President Joe Biden shifted toward stronger support for cryptocurrency after observing electoral dynamics.

Trump linked cryptocurrency to the U.S. dollar, observing that increasing use of Bitcoin for payments reduces reliance on cash and eases pressure on the currency. He described this development as beneficial for the country. At the same time, he emphasized opposition to China gaining a leading position in either cryptocurrency or artificial intelligence.

Related congressional perspective

The comments occur against the background of ongoing legislative efforts on digital assets. U.S. Senator Cynthia Lummis has repeatedly called for passage of the CLARITY Act.

In a May 30 post on X, Lummis stated that if the United States does not establish the global standard for digital asset regulation, another country will. She added that China is not waiting. Lummis has framed clear regulations as necessary to maintain the United States’ position in the global financial system.

Connection to broader technology competition

In the same interview segment, Trump referenced upcoming discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping. He stated that some observers attribute China’s actions in artificial intelligence to competitive pressures and that energy considerations have contributed to the United States’ current position in that field. Trump grouped artificial intelligence and cryptocurrency as areas where he does not want China to prevail.

Trump’s remarks in the Punchbowl News interview outline his position that cryptocurrency holds strategic importance for the United States relative to China and other nations. He expressed willingness to accept a blind trust arrangement for related business interests while opposing differentiated ethics restrictions.

The discussion coincides with congressional consideration of cryptocurrency legislation and with statements from Senator Lummis emphasizing the need for regulatory clarity to avoid ceding standard-setting to other countries.
