IREN Stock Climbs 8% to $39.75 as AI-Cloud Pivot Keeps Fueling Rally

The former Bitcoin miner Iris Energy rose 8% on Monday and edged higher in overnight trading, extending a volatile rally built on its shift into AI data centers and a run of bullish analyst calls.

IREN’s transformation from Bitcoin miner to AI cloud provider drives rally, fueled by $2.8 billion in new contracts and strong sentiment
Company’s pivot to AI cloud infrastructure increases volatility, with funding gap of $21.1 billion and criticism over dilution
IREN’s growth rests on execution of AI demand cycle and capacity expansion, with upcoming earnings report on August 27 to provide fresh insights

Shares of IREN Limited (Nasdaq: IREN) closed at $39.75 on Monday, August 3, up $2.95 or 8.02% on the day, according to Yahoo Finance data as of the 04:00 PM EDT close. The stock added a further 1.36% in the overnight session on the Blue Ocean ATS, quoted at $40.29 shortly after 01:00 AM EDT, though overnight trading runs on thin volume and can differ from the next regular session.

Monday’s gain extended one of the more dramatic rallies in the crypto-adjacent equity space this year. IREN, formerly the Australian Bitcoin miner Iris Energy, has been re-rated by investors as it pivots from mining toward artificial-intelligence cloud infrastructure, a transition that has made the stock both a market favorite and one of its most volatile names.

What’s Driving the Move

There was no single confirmed company announcement behind Monday’s specific 8% gain; rather, the move continued a momentum-driven rally fueled by a cluster of recent catalysts and strong sentiment across AI-infrastructure stocks.

The most concrete driver came on July 20, when IREN announced $2.8 billion in new multi-year customer contracts and lifted its 2026 annualized revenue run-rate target, the pace of revenue it expects to be generating by year-end, to above $4 billion, saying roughly 85% of that target was now under contract. That was followed by a run of bullish analyst commentary, including a Buy call from Bernstein in late July, adding fresh support after a sharp mid-July pullback. IREN has also moved in tandem with a broader rally in “neocloud” stocks, companies renting out GPU computing power for AI, alongside peers such as CoreWeave and Nebius.

From Bitcoin Miner to AI Cloud

IREN’s story is a case study in the transformation sweeping the mining sector. Founded as Iris Energy and renamed IREN in late 2024, the Sydney-based company still mines Bitcoin, but has increasingly repurposed its power-rich data centers to serve AI workloads. It now describes itself as a vertically integrated AI cloud provider, meaning it owns the land, power and data centers rather than merely renting space, and its customer list spans Microsoft, NVIDIA, Perplexity, Figure AI and Together AI, among others.

The scale of the buildout is central to the bull case. IREN has said it aims to deliver 480 megawatts of AI cloud capacity in 2026 and to expand that to 1.2 gigawatts in 2027. Earlier contracts, including a roughly $3.4 billion five-year cloud agreement with NVIDIA signed in May 2026 and a large lease at its Childress, Texas campus, had already reframed how investors view the company, as The Crypto Times explained in its primer on IREN stock. The July contracts added to that committed backlog.

The Analyst View

Wall Street has grown more bullish, though its price targets, which are analysts’ 12-month estimates, not forecasts by The Crypto Times, span a wide range that reflects genuine uncertainty. Freedom Broker upgraded IREN to Buy with a $58 target in July, and other firms have issued Buy ratings, with one aggregation of roughly nine analysts putting the median target near $80.

Other models are far more conservative; one independent valuation service pegged fair value around $41, close to where the stock now trades. That dispersion underscores how much of IREN’s valuation rests on an AI demand cycle and an execution ramp that are still unfolding.

The Risks Behind the Rally

The same features that make IREN a momentum favorite also make it hazardous, and the bear case is substantial. Building out gigawatts of AI capacity is enormously capital-intensive: one industry consultancy, Blocksbridge, estimated IREN faces a funding gap of roughly $21.1 billion to meet its AI ambitions, the largest among Bitcoin miners it assessed. Financing that is likely to mean more debt or share issuance, and the company has already drawn criticism over dilution, including large restricted-stock awards to its co-chief executives.

The stock’s own metrics flag the volatility. IREN carries a beta well above the market and short interest equal to roughly a quarter of its float, meaning a large share of investors are betting against it, a setup that can amplify moves in both directions. It has also swung violently in recent weeks, including a roughly 28% drop over five sessions in mid-July before rebounding. And because it still mines Bitcoin, its results remain partly exposed to Bitcoin’s price and to post-halving mining economics.

What to Watch

IREN is scheduled to report earnings on August 27, which will offer a fresh read on how quickly its AI cloud revenue is ramping and how it plans to fund the expansion. Until then, the stock is likely to keep trading on AI-sector sentiment and analyst commentary, a dynamic that has driven both its rapid gains and its sharp drops. As always with a name this volatile, the overnight and single-session moves described here are snapshots, not a settled trend, and nothing here is a prediction of where the stock goes next.
