OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, is secretly building a new social media platform to rival Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter). The app will focus on sharing AI-generated images, especially those created using ChatGPT’s image tool.
According to The Verge, OpenAI has started testing an early version of the app. While still in development, sources say it’s already working to some extent. CEO Sam Altman has been quietly gathering feedback from select users outside the company.
The platform centers around a feed, allowing people to post and browse visually stunning images made with AI. This move comes after OpenAI launched ChatGPT Gov to compete with DeepSeek.
Now, with the success of the Ghibli-style image trend, which went viral online and even got shared by Musk himself, OpenAI is riding a wave of growing public interest. This trend also helped make ChatGPT the most downloaded app last month.
While there’s no official name or release date yet, the goal is clear—OpenAI wants to give users a fresh, creative space powered by its technology. It could be part of the existing ChatGPT app or a separate platform entirely.
By launching its own app, OpenAI would also gain direct access to user data and interactions, helping it train future AI systems. The new platform is expected to go head-to-head with X, which feeds user content to Musk’s AI assistant, Grok.
With Altman and Musk already clashing publicly, this could heat up the competition even more.
