Ethereum core team member Tim Beiko has posted on X that Ethereum network is set to start it’s Pectra upgrade testing from 26th Feb on the Holesky testnet which will be followed by Sepolia on March 5.
The developers will meet on 6th March to finalize the launch timeline based on test results. If this test goes well then we can expect the upgrade in early April.
Pectra Upgrade is a combination of Prague and Electra upgrades. This upgrade is mainly aimed at enhancing wallets and validators’ operations for smooth functioning. Major improvements under this upgrade are EIP-7702 and EIP-7251.
The EIP-7702 will introduce account abstraction that will make wallets more user-friendly and users may soon pay gas fees in other currencies rather than only ETH to simplify transactions.
The EIP-7251 will allow validators to stake up to 2048 ETH tokens which is an increase from the current 32 ETH cap. This improvement will ease staking operations, will reduce infrastructure complexity, and will help shorten validator activation queues.
Recently, Ethereum has faced tough competition from its rival blockchain Solana which has gained popularity because of its high performance. There are also growing community concerns over the Ethereum ecosystem’s development direction. The Ethereum Foundation is also undergoing leadership change as recently we have seen an informal vote to make Danny Ryan as new leader.
This Pectra Upgrade is seen as the stabilizing force for the Ethereum ecosystem which will help transform the ecosystem for better user experience. If this upgrade is successful it will help Ethereum sustain its position in a competitive blockchain ecosystem.
