The cryptocurrency industry is pinning high hopes on the incoming Trump administration to prioritize clear regulatory guidelines for digital assets. With Donald Trump preparing for a second term as President, crypto leaders are optimistic about new policies that could boost the sector’s growth.
At the top of the industry’s wish list is an executive order directing agencies like the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to collaborate on a regulatory framework for digital assets.
While Congress ultimately decides how cryptocurrencies are classified, such an order could encourage these agencies to lay the groundwork with detailed research and recommendations.
Major players, including Coinbase and Ripple Labs, have long urged the government to establish clearer rules. These guidelines could help companies navigate compliance, attract investment, and reassure consumers.
President Trump is assembling a team of pro-industry leaders to shape financial policies. Notable picks include Paul Atkins, a former SEC Commissioner, as chair of the SEC, and Scott Bessent as Treasury Secretary. Trump has also created a new role, Artificial Intelligence and Crypto Czar, to be filled by David Sachs, co-founder of PayPal and a partner at Craft Ventures.
“These are the people who will shape the future of crypto policy,” said Ari Redbord, global policy head at blockchain intelligence firm TRM Labs. “They know the importance of balancing user privacy, consumer protection, and preventing misuse.”
The crypto industry also seeks fair access to banking services. During the Biden administration, several regulators highlighted risks associated with banks working with crypto companies. The closures of crypto-friendly banks like Silvergate and Signature in 2023 heightened these concerns.
“Equal regulatory treatment of banking and crypto, along with clear rules, will create a safer environment for consumers and the financial system,” said Rebeca Romero Rainey, president of the Independent Community Bankers of America.
