Orbit Chain Hacker Moves $47.7 Million to Tornado Cash

The perpetrator behind the $82 million Orbit Chain hack that occurred over New Year’s Eve has resurfaced, moving $47.7 million to the cryptocurrency privacy mixer Tornado Cash after five months of inactivity.

On June 8, 12,932 Ether (ETH), valued at $47.7 million, was transferred through seven transactions to a new address, which funneled the funds to Tornado Cash. Blockchain analytics firm Arkham Intelligence first identified this movement.

While initial reports pegged the loss from the exploit at $82 million, recent updates from Arkham suggest the figure is close to $100 million.

“They stole over $100M in ETH and DAI from Orbit Chain 5 months ago, and have been silent since,” Arkham highlighted in a June 8 post on X.

🚨ONGOING: $100M Orbit Chain Exploiter sends $32M to Tornado Cash after 5 months silence

In the past hour, the Orbit Chain Exploiter moved 8671 ETH ($32M) to a new address and is currently in the process of depositing it to Tornado Cash.

The transactions involving the $47.7 million in Ether were mostly in increments of 100 ETH, as indicated by Etherscan data. Notably, the hacker has yet to move the $20 million in Dai (DAI) or any other assets taken from the cross-chain bridge.

Following these transactions, the hacker’s balance remains substantial at $71.2 million, which includes $51.1 million in Ether, alongside smaller amounts of wrapped Bitcoin (wBTC), wrapped Ether (wETH), Orbit Chain (ORC), and USD Coin (USDC).

The breach occurred in the closing hours of 2023, around 8:52 pm UTC on December 31, 2023. Orbit Chain acknowledged the exploit the next day and announced that they were collaborating with international law enforcement agencies.

Orbit Chain’s X account stated on January 11 that offering a bounty for information could lead to the identification of the attacker or the recovery of the stolen assets. “Those who provide decisive intelligence that leads to identifying the attacker or recovering stolen assets will receive the bounty,” they announced, offering up to $8 million as a maximum reward.
