The U.S. government and prosecutors have raised concerns over a virtual private network (VPN) used by Sam Bankman-Fried, a founder of bankrupt crypto exchange FTX.
The concern was highlighted In a letter written by the U.S. attorney Danielle Sassoon to Judge Lewis Kaplan on Feb 13. The letter states that the government alerted defence counsel after they found the use of a privacy tool at least two times, on January 29, 2023, and February 12, 2023. .
The government put its perspective forward on VPNs, quoted in a letter that “it is well known that some individuals use VPNs to disguise the fact that they are accessing international cryptocurrency exchanges that use IPs to block U.S. users.”
In response to this matter, Bankman-Fried’s attorney Mark Cohen claimed that the defendant used VPN to watch the National Football League (NFL), and the Super Bowl through an international subscription.
The attorney also added that he’s ready to adopt a reasonable bail condition and Bankman-Fried will not use a VPN during the interim.
The court has already restricted Bankman-Fried’s ability to contact FTX employees using ephemeral messaging services like Signal.
