Polygon introduces Zero-knowledge Identity for Web3 Users

The scaling solution on the Ethereum blockchain, Polygon is gearing up for the upcoming internet revolution by introducing Polygon ID for its users. The new feature uses zero-knowledge (ZK) proofs to create a digital identity without violating data privacy.

The platform claims to be the first platform “powered by zero-knowledge (ZK) cryptography, a privacy and blockchain scaling technology.” The platform keeps a complete user-privacy while making on-chain verification on the open attestation ecosystem.

Polygon ID leverages the Iden3 protocol and Circom ZK toolkit. Polygon stated that the platform is working on the ZK-proof-based identity solution that will enable users to verify their identities without revealing their sensitive information. This feature will help the network to achieve its vision.

While keeping an eye on the future, Polygon is keeping ZK  at the center of its vision, which is committed to $1 billion in compatible projects including its buying of Mir protocol for $400M. Polygon ID is currently under development. The launch of Polygon ID is scheduled for Q3 2022.

Polygon ID feature includes Polygon ID Wallet app, Polygon ID Platform and Polygon ID Connect to integrate access across user wallets and applications.

Zero-knowledge proof checks users’ identities without asking for extra details or personal documents except for cryptographic proof. Before this, ZK-proofs have been used by privacy blockchains like Monero and Zcash because of their privacy policy.

The Polygon ID ZK-proofs will be leveraged to users’ identification for know-your-customer verification, which prevents one from submitting their government ID. Even though crypto addresses are anonymous in themselves, the team has outlined the need for its ID.

Mihailo Bjelic, Polygon’s Co-founder, stated, “Polygon ID is private by default, offers on-chain verification and permissionless attestation. There is nothing in the digital identity space now that ticks all these boxes. It is also a great showcase for how zero-knowledge proofs can help us create a better world.”
