BNY, officially The Bank of New York Mellon Corporation, a global financial services company, announced the expansion of its Digital Asset Custody platform to select institutions in the European Union under the Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework.
According to the official announcement published on October 8, the expansion follows the addition of The Bank of New York Mellon SA/NV, BNY’s European banking entity, to the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) MiCA register in July 2026. Registration enables the bank to offer custody, administration, and transfer services for crypto-assets to clients within the European Union.
Supported assets on the platform
BNY launched its Digital Asset Custody platform in 2022. The platform provides safekeeping and servicing of digital assets through infrastructure that incorporates multiparty computation technology, segregated client wallets, and storage of private keys.
Under the expanded EU offering, BNY can provide regulated access to assets including Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), Solana (SOL), and USD Coin (USDC). The firm intends to support a broader range of crypto-assets and stablecoins. Digital Asset Custody serves as the foundation for BNY’s wider digital asset capabilities, including use cases involving digital cash, tokenized assets, payments, settlement, and collateral mobility.
MiCA register context
ESMA previously added 15 crypto-asset service providers to its interim MiCA register, bringing the total number of authorized entities to 309 in the third update since the European Union’s transitional deadline passed on July 1. The new entries included four banking institutions. BNY SA/NV was identified as the most prominent addition among them.
The report notes that BNY holds approximately $55.8 trillion in assets under custody and administration and processes about $2.5 trillion in payments daily. As claimed in the report, the bank was the first globally systemically important bank to offer regulated digital asset custody, having launched that service in the United States in October 2022 with Fireblocks and Chainalysis as technology partners.
Related partnership developments
In an earlier announcement dated August 4, digital asset firm Galaxy Digital and BNY said they were exploring a partnership to introduce staking capabilities within BNY’s Digital Asset Custody platform. Under the arrangement, Galaxy would support staking infrastructure for BNY and serve as a design partner for the bank’s broader digital asset platform.
The staking offering is not yet available to clients. The companies stated that it remains subject to regulatory review, and no launch timeline has been announced.
The EU expansion allows BNY to deliver custody, administration, and transfer services for crypto-assets on behalf of clients in one of the largest regulated markets for digital assets. The platform’s design centers on risk management and security controls, including the use of multiparty computation, segregated wallets, and private-key storage arrangements.
