Key Highlights
- Zcash activated Ironwood NU6.3, introducing a new shielded pool to address the Orchard soundness vulnerability.
- Orchard funds must now migrate through a protocol-level turnstile before entering the new Ironwood pool.
- The upgrade includes formal verification and security audits, though the ZEC price fell over 5% in the past 24 hours despite the technical changes.
Zcash, a private, digital money system, activated its Ironwood NU6.3 network upgrade on Tuesday at block height 3,428,143. The upgrade introduces a new shielded pool designed to address a previously identified soundness vulnerability in the Orchard pool and improve the overall verifiability of the network’s circulating supply.
In an X post on Tuesday, Zcash Open Development Lab said the original Orchard pool has been restricted following the activation. Funds exiting Orchard must now pass through a protocol-level “turnstile” mechanism before entering the new Ironwood shielded pool.
What the upgrade means for users
The Ironwood upgrade was developed in response to a soundness vulnerability discovered in late May 2026 by security researcher Taylor Hornby of Shielded Labs. The issue was responsibly disclosed and patched, with no evidence that the vulnerability was exploited or that user funds or total ZEC supply were affected.
Ironwood incorporates formal verification and independent security audits to strengthen the shielded pool’s cryptographic foundation. The upgrade was coordinated across multiple teams in the Zcash ecosystem, including Shielded Labs, Project Tachyon, Valar Group, the Zcash Foundation, and wallet provider Zodl.
For users, Orchard funds need to be migrated to the new Ironwood pool. Zodl wallet version 3.8.0 supports direct migration without requiring a new wallet or address. An automated migration feature is planned for the near future.
Network upgrade fails to lift ZEC price

As of July 28, 2026, at 8:17 IST, Zcash (ZEC) was trading at $462.93, down 5.33% in the last 24 hours and 14.88% over the past week. The token has been trading in a volatile range between $459.39 and $490.96 in the past day amid broader market movements.
While the Ironwood upgrade provides positive technical news, it has not immediately translated into price support. ZEC remains significantly below its all-time high of $5,941.80 from 2016.
Zcash’s market capitalization stood at $7.78 billion, with trading activity remaining elevated. However, near-term price movement is likely to depend on broader market conditions and the progress of user migration to the new shielded pool.
Adoption challenges remain
Despite the technical changes introduced by Ironwood, Zcash continues to face challenges in adoption and market performance. Privacy-focused cryptocurrencies have struggled to gain mainstream traction amid increasing regulatory pressure on anonymous transactions. The repeated need for emergency upgrades following vulnerability discoveries highlights ongoing risks in complex shielded protocols, potentially eroding user confidence over time.
The migration process, while designed to be user-friendly, adds friction that could slow momentum. For a project emphasizing financial privacy, persistent questions around real-world utility and competition from newer privacy solutions may limit its growth prospects.
