A philosophical exchange between two of crypto and tech’s most influential figures has reignited one of crypto’s favorite debates: whether the future of freedom lies not in reforming existing states, but in building new ones from scratch: possibly off-planet.
The conversation sparked when Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong posted a thesis regarding the imminent arrival of orbital data centers. According to Armstrong, the fact that space-based compute is becoming a highly viable alternative to land-bound builds is a damning indictment of terrestrial bureaucracy.
“Freedom is always on the frontier,” Armstrong wrote. He argued that any “next constitution,” whether deployed on Mars or within newly carved special economic zones (SEZs), should bake in explicit, structural restraints against the unchecked growth of regulation and government spending.
Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk validated the underlying premise, replying that space-based infrastructure was always the ultimate destination because it allows compute to scale infinitely. Armstrong’s subsequent counter-proposal is what set crypto and network-state circles buzzing: “Maybe space habitats become the special economic zones (finally some new territory to test governance ideas without prior baggage).”
Why this lands squarely in crypto
It would be easy to file this under billionaire space-talk. But for Armstrong specifically, it is the latest expression of a worldview he has been building toward, and investing in, for years.
In January 2025, Armstrong publicly backed Próspera, a charter-city project on the Honduran island of Roatán that functions as a semi-autonomous special economic zone (SEZ) featuring a hyper-flexible regulatory sandbox. Próspera sits at the absolute center of the “Network State” movement, a thesis popularized by former Coinbase CTO Balaji Srinivasan stating that the logical evolution of decentralized digital currencies is the creation of decentralized physical communities.
Seen through that lens, “space habitats as special economic zones” is not a throwaway quip. It is the same regulatory-arbitrage logic that underpins crypto itself, permissionless systems, opt-in governance, jurisdictional competition, projected onto the ultimate greenfield.
The orbital land grab is already real
What makes the exchange more than thought experiment is that the infrastructure premise is no longer hypothetical. February 2026 became the first month in history with multiple orbital datacenter operators running production workloads in space. Axiom Space launched the first orbital datacenter nodes in January 2026; Starcloud, backed by Nvidia, has raised at a $1.1 billion valuation and trained an AI model in orbit; Google’s Project Suncatcher is preparing to loft TPU-laden satellites; and SpaceX has filed to operate up to a million datacenter satellites.
The pitch is energy: a solar array in the right orbit can be five to eight times more productive than on the ground, with no cooling water and near-continuous power. The skepticism is also real, analysts at Varda have estimated orbital compute could cost roughly three times more per watt than terrestrial equivalents, and thermal management in vacuum remains unsolved at scale. The race, as one analysis put it, is against both physics and time.
From DePIN to off-planet compute
The crypto-infrastructure read is direct. Decentralized physical infrastructure networks (DePIN), decentralized compute marketplaces, large-scale node operations, zero-knowledge proving and on-chain AI agents all run on the same scarce inputs Armstrong and Musk are talking about: cheap compute and abundant energy. If orbital capacity ever undercuts heavily permitted, grid-constrained terrestrial buildouts, where approvals stretch into years, the gravitational pull on next-generation crypto and AI infrastructure could point upward. Frontier builders, in crypto and compute alike, increasingly treat regulatory timelines as the binding constraint, not the technology.
The skeptical counter-narrative
The vision is not without its fierce critics. Detractors argue that the network-state philosophy is fundamentally an attempt by wealthy technologists to engineer an absolute “exit” from democratic accountability, standard taxation, and societal obligations.
These frictions are already playing out on Earth; the Honduran government has repeatedly challenged Próspera’s special legal status in court, exposing the deeply contested politics of private governance. Skeptics note that moving these unresolved friction points into a vacuum does not erase the ethical, legal, and human complexities of governance, it simply makes them harder to regulate.
Nevertheless, the signal is unmistakable. When the leader of America’s largest crypto exchange and the world’s primary aerospace pioneer openly agree that the next major leap in infrastructure will happen outside the boundaries of legacy nation-states, it solidifies a core crypto truth: if you cannot fix a broken system, you exit it and build a new one.
