Michael Saylor Commits to Buying Bitcoin Every Quarter Indefinitely

Key Highlights

  • Strategy commits to a permanent acquisition model, planning to purchase additional Bitcoin every quarter indefinitely.
  • The firm identifies Bitcoin as superior “digital capital” and its STRC preferred stock as “digital credit” that outpaces traditional financial systems.
  • Michael Saylor describes MSTR stock as an amplified version of Bitcoin designed to provide shareholders with enhanced returns.

Strategy Executive Chairman Michael Saylor appeared on CNBC’s “Squawk Box” today to discuss the company’s commitment to Bitcoin and the performance of digital assets.

During the broadcast, Saylor explained how the firm’s strategy of using low-interest debt to buy the cryptocurrency has allowed it to do better than traditional benchmarks.

“We’re not going to be selling; I expect we are going to be buying every quarter forever,” Saylor said during the interview. This discussion highlights Strategy’s growth into a Bitcoin development company, which continues to deal with market volatility by what Saylor calls a more efficient form of capital.

The company recently added 1,142 BTC to its holdings. Saylor noted that the performance of MicroStrategy (MSTR) stock and its assets shows a major change in the financial landscape, where digital credit and capital are starting to surpass traditional systems.

STRC digital credit

Saylor addressed concerns about short-term price changes, stressing a long-term commitment to the asset. He also said, “STRC is the most popular digital credit instrument of the decade. It’s trading 100x as much as traditional preferred stocks.”

He argued that the global and decentralized nature of Bitcoin makes it a better choice than traditional fiat-based assets. He said that “digital capital has seen “2-4x the performance this decade.”

Comparing digital and traditional capital

Comparing it to conventional capital, Saylor said, “The volatility is the bug, but the volatility is the feature,” because it runs on a transparent protocol that is not affected by inflation risks or geographic limits of local currencies.

He pointed out that Bitcoin’s ability to be transferred across borders instantly and stored without counterparty risk gives it a major advantage that traditional capital, such as real estate or gold, cannot offer.

Efficient credit system

Saylor emphasized that digital credit is better than conventional credit because it allows a firm to borrow in a declining currency to invest in a limited, appreciating digital asset. He highlighted that by issuing fixed-rate debt to buy Bitcoin, the company captures the difference between the falling value of traditional credit and the growing value of digital capital.

According to Saylor, this strategy has turned the company’s balance sheet into a wealth-creating machine that traditional credit systems cannot match. “We have 2.5 years of dividend coverage and debt coverage in cash,” Saylor noted. Strategy raised $4 billion this year alone and $25 billion last year.

Amplified Bitcoin returns

In discussing the performance of MicroStrategy’s shares (MSTR) compared to Bitcoin, Saylor clarified the company’s unique position in the market. He went on to state that “MSTR is amplified Bitcoin,” adding that this was because of how the company used leverage and its status as a corporation to create a “Bitcoin yield” for investors.

This means that the company’s shares are likely to move by greater percentages compared to the underlying cryptocurrency, giving investors seeking a high beta a chance to tap into Bitcoin’s growth.

Future performance outlook

As the interview came to a conclusion, Saylor was asked to predict the Bitcoin price 12 months from now, to which he replied, “I don’t really make predictions over 12 months.”

He added, “I think that Bitcoin is going to double or triple the performance of the S&P over the next 4-8 years and I think that’s the only thing we need to know.”
