BNB Chain’s official X account was compromised this week, triggering an immediate security alert from Binance Co-Founder Changpeng “CZ” Zhao and a flurry of warnings from the BNB Chain team. The breach led to the posting of phishing links designed to trick users into connecting their crypto wallets and exposing their funds.
BNB Chain confirms breach, warns users
The first confirmation came from BNB Chain’s Chinese X account, which told followers: “Currently, the English official Twitter account of @BNBCHAIN has been compromised. We are urgently working on a fix. Please do not click on any links!”
Shortly after, CZ took to X to sound the alarm. “ALERT The @BNBCHAIN X account may have been compromised,” he posted. “Please do not click on any links recently posted from this account. The teams are investigating and will share updates as soon as possible.”
The warning came after the hacked account posted a fraudulent message inviting users to vote on an “upcoming $BSC rewards date.” It falsely promised early $BSC rewards to those who participated within the first 24 hours, a typical phishing ploy meant to lure users into handing over wallet access.
CZ: “Do NOT connect your wallet”
A few hours later, CZ confirmed the account had indeed been compromised. “The @BNBCHAIN X account is compromised,” he wrote. “The hacker posted a bunch of links to phishing websites that ask for Wallet Connect. Do NOT connect your wallet.”
He added that Binance’s security teams had already contacted X to suspend the account before working to restore access. Takedown requests for all identified phishing sites were also underway. “Always check the domains very carefully, even from official X handles,” CZ advised. “Stay SAFU!”
Community urged to be vigilant
Phishing campaigns like this one are among the most common tactics used by hackers to drain crypto wallets. They often disguise themselves as reward programs or exclusive offers, prompting users to click on malicious links or sign fraudulent transactions.
BNB Chain has not yet shared details about how the breach occurred. Binance did not immediately respond to any comment. For now, the team is continuing its investigation and is working to regain full control of the compromised account.
Meanwhile, users should avoid clicking on or responding to any recent posts from the BNB Chain account. Users should follow only the official updates shared on Binance’s verified channels until the team fully regains control of the account.
