A piece of meme history is up for grabs—and it may never be available again. The original pink hat worn by Achi, the Shiba Inu behind the legendary “Dogwifhat” meme, is officially hitting the auction block.
As of the latest update, the meme coin has a top bid of 6.8 BTC, which is approximately $791,248.38 came from a user by the name Finn.bags. The auction, which has 3 hours before it closes at the time of writing, started with an initial bid of 0.00025 BTC on August 5. In three days it’s about to close at 7 BTC. Who knows if someone comes out to pay 10 BTC at the last moment.
The auction offers collectors and meme lovers a rare chance to own the actual hat that sparked one of the internet’s most iconic memes. The sale includes high-resolution photos, a verification note, and a video from Achi’s owners detailing the hat’s origins.
This handcrafted wool hat, measuring 12.5 x 12.5 x 10 cm and weighing just 0.09 kg, holds massive cultural value. Achi’s parents took the now-famous photo on November 17, 2018. The image was then uploaded by a friend to Instagram.
There was a time when the meme went viral, particularly on Reddit and Twitter, carrying a curious taste of surreal humor combined with irresistible charm. Further, the meme was part of the journey to the birth of $WIF cryptocurrency, which at one instance had a market cap of billions of dollars.
Verified Legacy on Bitcoin Blockchain
To confirm its authenticity, the team inscribed a photo of Achi and his parents with the hat on the Bitcoin blockchain. This step used Ordinals technology to lock in digital provenance. Additionally, a DAO known as the Bureau of Internet Culture backed the 2024 NFT sale of the meme, which sold for 1,210.759 ETH ($4.3M at the time).
The hat started as a Christmas decoration and was made from yarn originally meant for donation. Achi, born in September 2018, quickly became an internet sweetheart. His meme lives on, now anchored in history.
The price of $WIF is currently trading at $0.909788, up 0.59% in the last day, with a daily volume of approximately $223 million, according to CoinMarketCap.
