CoinMarketCap Confirms Removal of Malicious Wallet Scam Popup

One of the most popular websites that track prices of cryptocurrencies, CoinMarketCap, has eliminated a shady popup on its site that asked users to verify their wallets.

On Friday, the platform confirmed the incident on its official X account, saying, “We have removed the malicious code on our site.” The warning appeared to be a phishing attack, aiming to prompt users to connect their wallets and approve the use of ERC-20 tokens.

Update: We've identified and removed the malicious code from our site.

Our team is continuing to investigate and taking steps to strengthen our security.

Some crypto users on X cautioned that the popup attempted to steal personal information and private keys. One user, Auri, wrote that the popup requests users to connect their wallets and approve transactions.

In its initial response to the problem on X, CoinMarketCap stated, “We know that a malicious popup asking users to verify wallet has been present on our site.” The update was made within three hours of the reports in the community, and CoinMarketCap was fast in action.

Despite removing the malicious code, the platform continues its investigation. It added that its team is still investigating and is making efforts to bolster its security.

MetaMask and Phantom crypto wallets swiftly responded, alerting users and preventing them from succumbing to the trap. Jet, another user, reported that both wallets had promptly alerted users to the threat.

CoinMarketCap told users not to link their wallets to pop-ups and vowed to improve site security. This case serves as a lesson to every crypto user to be alert, not trust any unknown popups, and make sure to check links on official sources before using wallets.
