As the Merge approaches (VERY SOON!), Ethereum will transition to proof of stake. In the event of this, the Google Search engine is celebrating with an Ethereum Merge countdown clock displaying the difficulty rate, hash rate, and a cartoon or de facto mascot for Ethereum’s transition.
Proponents claim that the PoS approach can reduce Ethereum’s electricity consumption by 99%. The truth of these claims will be revealed in time, but for now, the presence of the doodle suggests a level of excitement for the Merge felt by even the most powerful tech companies.
Sam Padilla, a Google Cloud developer, announced the Ethereum Merge countdown clock. Searches for “Ethereum Merge” now yield a native countdown clock, as well as two happy bears approaching each other with outstretched arms.
Earlier, Tim Beiko of the Ethereum Foundation teased on Twitter that the Ethereum Merge would be represented by a “bear” emoji. So the bears are a well-known fixture of Ethereum Merge meme culture.
When the Ethereum Merge is complete, the illustrated cartoon figures will merge in true Google fashion.
