Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin counted the benefits of the Ethereum merge after the current Ethereum Mainnet merge with the Beacon Chain proof-of-stake consensus. At a conference, he explained the steps of the Ethereum Merge roadmap.
Ethereum Merge is scheduled before the end of this year and recently its testing is on the way.
While attending the annual Ethereum Community Conference (EthCC) in Paris on July 20, Vitalik stated that post-merge clients will be onboarded that “doesn’t even know the proof of work phase happened”.
“Ethereum today can process about 15-20 transactions a second. This Ethereum including the rollups, including the sharding […] it’s going to be able to process 100,000 transactions a second,” Buterin said.
He also took the name of other phases following the Merge, such as Surge and Verge.
Vitalik stated that the ‘Surge’ will be the next phase in the Ethereum Merge process, which will enhance scalability for rollups through the sharding.

Sharding is the process to divide a network across multiple nodes called “Shards” to process lots of transactions at once.
The remaining three goals will be covered in the Verge, which is the next step in the roadmap after Post Merge and the Surge steps. This step will deploy the Verkle tree data structure alongside the current using hexary Patricia tree.
The fourth phase in Ethereum Merge will be the Purge which will mark stating expiries and delete old extrinsic histories.
The final step will be “Splurge”, which Vitalik referred to as “all of the other fun stuff”.
Ethereum Network also planned to upgrade with a Single secret leader election (SSLE) capability to withstand denial-of-service attacks (DoS attacks).
Vitalik stated that “With an SSLE you’re not going to be able to tell who is going to create the next block until they actually release the block, which is really amazing. It gives us really nice security property.”
He also discussed other possible upgrades for the Ethereum network to integrate for its efficient operations and settlements including Single Slot Finality.
