British Military’s Social Media Account Hacked to Advertise Crypto scams

One shocking event came to grab headlines so many news agencies as the hacker gained the control of the British Military’s social media accounts for possibly a crypto scam.

According to the report, the attacker successfully compromised the British Army’s Twitter and YouTube accounts on Sunday.

The attacker wasn’t stopped here as he changed the account name to “pssssd” and uploaded a new profile picture as well as a banner picture that resembles a nonfungible token collection called “The Possessed.”

Luckily, The Possessed’s official Twitter account warned people about a new  “new verified SCAM account” pretending to be a NFT collection.

On Sunday, the account name was again changed to another NFT collection “Bapesclan”. This time the account was displaying a cartoon ape with clown makeup on. Also, it has also posted multiple retweets about promoting NFT giveaway schemes.

On the other hand, the British military’s Youtube account name was changed to “Ark Investment”. This is the investment firm of Tesla and Bitcoin bull Cathie Wood.

On the Youtube account, the perpetrator deleted all videos and uploaded the old videos of Elon Musk and Jack Dorsey about bitcoin that were hosted by Ark in July 2021. There were some texts added in the about that linked to crypto scam websites.

However, both malicious accounts were restored successfully and transferred to their real owner.

“The breach of the Army’s Twitter and YouTube accounts that occurred earlier today has been resolved and an investigation is underway,” Britain’s Ministry of Defense tweeted Monday.

The Army takes information security extremely seriously and until their investigation is complete it would be inappropriate to comment further.

A Twitter spokesperson confirmed the British Army’s account hacking incident and its recovery.

Tobias Ellwood, a British Conservative lawmaker who chairs the defense committee in Parliament cited the security breach as “serious”. He added,“I hope the results of the investigation and actions taken will be shared appropriately.”

In the past, similar hacking attacks were launched on famous people including Musk, President Joe Biden, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and others.
