In what was the third government account to be hacked in a period of 48 hours, the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India’s Twitter handle was taken over by hackers late Saturday night.
The breach was identified when some unknown hackers took over the twitter handle and made several tweets regarding NFTs from the account.
The hackers also posted an irrelevant thread of tweets tagging, what seem to be, several unknown handles across the globe.
The profile and background picture of the handle was also replaced with a cartoonist picture by the hackers.
The account has been recovered as of now. The twitter handle is followed by 2,96,000 people and is linked to the official website of UGC.
A case has been filed against unknown persons under relevant sections of the IT act in a police station in Lucknow. A team of experts from the DGP’s office will investigate the case further.
The University Grants Commission of India is a statutory body set up by the Department of Higher Education. It’s responsible for the coordination, determination and maintenance of standards of higher education.
In the same 48 hours, the accounts of the UP Chief Minister’s Office and the Indian Meteorological Department of India were also hacked.
In December, the hackers hacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Twitter account, declaring that bitcoin was a legal tender in India and even attempted a bitcoin giveaway.
