Key Highlights
- Petrobras and the Cardano Foundation are testing two blockchain applications for renewable fuel tracking.
- One project records environmental attributes linked to sustainable aviation fuel certificates.
- A second application tracks renewable diesel data across production, transportation, and use.
The Cardano Foundation and Petrobras are developing two blockchain-based applications to record sustainability and emissions-related data linked to renewable fuel supply chains in Brazil.
According to an announcement published September 30, the projects cover sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and Petrobras’ renewable diesel product, Diesel R. PUC-Rio is also involved in the research.
The systems are being tested to manage data associated with the fuels and their supply chains rather than track the physical movement of the fuel itself.
SAF project records environmental attributes
The first project focuses on sustainable aviation fuel and uses a Book-and-Claim model.
Under this approach, the environmental benefit associated with SAF can be separated from the physical fuel. The application records information about the origin of that benefit, how it is allocated, and whether it has already been claimed.
The project also includes a passenger-facing tool. Users can enter departure and destination airports to calculate the corresponding amount of CS-SAF, a digital representation of the environmental benefit associated with an SAF certificate.
The resulting certificate can include the passenger’s route, travel distance and allocation.
Petrobras tests Diesel R data tracking
The second project covers Diesel R, Petrobras’ renewable diesel product.
The second project proposes using Cardano to record data across different stages of the product’s lifecycle, including production, transportation and use.
One potential application is Scope 3 emissions reporting, which covers indirect emissions generated across a company’s value chain.
Such calculations can rely on data from suppliers, logistics providers and other companies across the value chain. The system is being tested to connect information from these stages so that data used in emissions calculations can be traced back through the supply chain.
PUC-Rio participates in research
PUC-Rio is participating in both projects through its blockchain research work.
The university has previously collaborated with Petrobras and the Cardano Foundation on blockchain-related initiatives. The latest projects apply that research to renewable fuel and environmental data.
The work also follows a broader Cardano programme announced in June 2026 covering blockchain education, professional certification and industrial pilot projects in Brazil.
Cardano says projects focus on data provenance
Rafael Fraga, LATAM Business Development Lead at the Cardano Foundation, said the projects are focused on establishing where environmental data originates and how it is transferred between participants.
“As value chains become more complex, proving where environmental data comes from, how it moves and who can rely on it becomes critical.”
Fraga also said public blockchains could provide a common record for information shared among multiple organizations.
The comments reflect the foundation’s stated view of the technology’s potential. The announcement does not provide independent evidence that the applications have improved emissions reporting or supply-chain efficiency.
Projects have not reached commercial deployment
The two applications address different parts of renewable fuel reporting.
The SAF project deals with the allocation and tracking of environmental benefits associated with fuel certificates, while the Diesel R application focuses on data generated across production, transportation, and use.
Both remain in the R&D phase, and neither project has been announced for commercial or nationwide deployment.
The projects are part of ongoing efforts by companies and research institutions in Brazil to test blockchain for supply-chain records, environmental reporting and other industrial applications. Whether either system moves into wider deployment will depend on further testing and adoption by the organizations involved.
