Coinbase’s Ethereum Validators Outperform Network in Q2 2026

Coinbase’s Ethereum validators recorded 99.97% uptime in the second quarter of 2026, outperforming the network average of 99.76%, as the cryptocurrency exchange continued to emphasize validator reliability, infrastructure diversity and risk management.

According to Coinbase’s Q2 Ethereum Validator Performance Report, published on August 17, the company’s validators generated an average annual percentage yield (APY) of 2.87%, compared with 2.80% for the broader Ethereum network. Coinbase said its validators recorded no slashing or double-signing events since inception.

Coinbase will leverage its diversified validator network to sustain high uptime during the upcoming Glamsterdam upgrade.
Prepared infrastructure aims to mitigate upgrade risks, ensuring institutional stakers’ yields remain stable post‑Glamsterdam.
Continued client and relay diversity positions Coinbase to adapt quickly to new Ethereum consensus mechanisms.

The company also reported:

  • 4.76 million ETH staked through Coinbase-operated validators on average during Q2.
  • 12.16% of total staked ETH represented by Coinbase-operated validators.
  • Zero slashing or double-signing events since Coinbase began operating its validators.
  • A commitment to keeping Coinbase-operated stake below 30% of the Ethereum network.

Validator performance

Coinbase said its validators outperformed the network across Ethereum’s three primary consensus duties during Q2. Attestation participation was 21 basis points above the network average, and block proposal performance exceeded the network average by 21 basis points. Participation in sync committees was 37 basis points higher.

Sync committee performance had lagged the network in the first quarter but moved ahead in Q2, according to the report.

Coinbase said participation rate measures how effectively validators complete assigned consensus duties. These include signing and submitting attestations, proposing blocks and participating in sync committees.

The company said its reward performance is influenced not only by protocol-level issuance but also by execution-layer rewards, including priority fees and maximum extractable value (MEV) from proposed blocks.

Diversifying infrastructure

A key part of Coinbase’s strategy is limiting the risks associated with infrastructure concentration.

The exchange operates validators across four countries — Ireland, Japan, the Netherlands and Singapore — with multiple availability zones in each region. Its infrastructure is also spread across two cloud providers, Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud Platform.

Coinbase said this geographic and cloud diversification is intended to reduce the impact of regional outages or technical problems affecting a single provider.

The company also has a validator orchestration system that can move validators between data centers without downtime. Coinbase said the system has not yet been required to respond to an outage, but has been used for routine migrations and scheduled maintenance.

Client and relay diversity

Coinbase operates two Ethereum consensus clients, Lighthouse and Prysm, alongside three execution clients: Nethermind, Reth and Geth.

Lighthouse accounted for 72% of Coinbase’s consensus-client fleet and Prysm for 28%. On the execution side, Nethermind represented 39%, Reth 33% and Geth 28%.

The strategy is designed to reduce the impact of a software defect affecting any single client. Coinbase noted that excessive client concentration can become a broader network risk because a major defect could potentially disrupt Ethereum’s ability to reach finality.

The company also connects its validators to seven MEV relays, including Flashbots, bloXroute Max Profit, bloXroute Regulated, ultrasound relay, Agnostic Relay, Aestus and Titan. Coinbase said it offers OFAC screening as an option for customers that require transaction filtering.

Preparing for Glamsterdam

Coinbase is preparing its validator infrastructure for Ethereum’s next major upgrade, Glamsterdam, which is expected in the second half of 2026. Ethereum developers launched the Platåberget public testnet on August 17 as an early testing ground for the upgrade.

The company highlighted several proposals expected to shape the upgrade:

  • EIP-7732: Enshrined proposer-builder separation, or ePBS, which would separate the propagation of consensus blocks from execution payloads.
  • EIP-7928: Block-level access lists, designed to provide information about the accounts and storage touched by transactions and support more parallel processing.
  • EIP-7708: Standardized ETH transfer logs, making native ETH transfers easier to track and reconcile.
  • EIP-8061: A proposed increase in validator exit and consolidation churn, which remains under consideration rather than being confirmed for the upgrade.

Coinbase said it expects mechanisms such as MEV-Boost to remain relevant for block building, while keeping its approach flexible as Ethereum’s block-building market evolves.

The company is tracking Glamsterdam across test networks and preparing its validator infrastructure ahead of the upgrade. For institutional staking customers, Coinbase’s latest figures underline its focus on maintaining validator performance while limiting infrastructure and client concentration risks as Ethereum continues to scale.
