Ukraine Users Ask Uniswap to Lift Geo-Blocking Restrictions

Ukraine Users Ask Uniswap to Lift Geo-Blocking Restrictions

A Ukrainian user addressed an open letter to Uniswap on X (formerly Twitter) today, asking that the platform’s decentralized application stop blocking access to its website in the country. The user claimed to have previously raised the issue through a support ticket but nothing has changed.

According to the letter, Uniswap justified the block by citing the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s OFAC sanctions list. The writer argued that they misunderstood the rules, and clarified that the sanctions apply only to Crimea and the Russia-occupied Donetsk and Luhansk regions which are under Russian control, and not to the rest of Ukraine.

Dear @Uniswap,

I am writing this letter to you because your dapp is still blocked and can't be used in Ukraine. We had this conversation before and despite my efforts to convince you why it is legal to access the dapp from Kyiv (support ticket 169045), nothing has changed since… pic.twitter.com/RDy1UfS0WC

“Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities are not mentioned whatsoever,” the user wrote, calling the restriction “absurd.”

The user expressed his disappointment. He said that the restriction contradicts DeFi’s promise of open access and trustless technology and reminded Uniswap of its role in shaping decentralized finance.

“Crypto and DeFi as we know them today would not exist without Uniswap’s leadership and open-mindedness.” He wrote.

The post suggested that blocking users in Ukraine during wartime harms a nation already struggling to maintain access to global financial systems. The writer added, “Ukraine, being in the middle of the war, fighting for freedom, and you are limiting the availability of your service on some false regulatory claims.”

The user urged Uniswap to resolve the issue quickly, and hoped public attention would help solve the problem. As of now, Uniswap has not responded to the appeal.
