An Ethereum developer known online as “Fede’s Intern” has reportedly been detained in the Turkish city of Izmir under unclear circumstances, according to multiple social media posts over the weekend.
Posts from the developer’s account on X indicated that local authorities accused him of helping individuals “misuse” the Ethereum network. No specific activities or legal statutes were cited, and the developer denied any wrongdoing and said he was willing to cooperate with authorities.
Cenk, a Turkish cryptocurrency commentator, said there appeared to be “zero legal basis” for holding someone on such grounds, noting that Turkey currently relies on existing commercial, consumer, and penal codes when handling crypto-related matters.
In a series of intermittent updates, Fede’s Intern said he had been moved to a private room, given food, and told arrangements were being made for him to leave Turkey on a private jet to Europe. He claimed that once there, he would work with a legal team to contest the accusations.
Messages of support reportedly poured in from members of both the Ethereum and Solana communities, with several figures offering legal assistance and connections. Some in the community compared this to the arrests of Binance executives Tigran Gambaryan and Nadeem Anjarwalla in Nigeria, saying it underscored the need for clear legal process and transparency.
Others argued it might be nothing more than a translation mix-up or confusion over the basics of blockchain infrastructure. Even so, there is unease that it could mark the start of a tougher stance on cryptocurrency in the region.
Ryan Sean Adams, a prominent Ethereum advocate, called the situation “very troubling” in a post on X, noting the irony that Istanbul had been considered as a potential host city for Devcon 2026.
For now, details remain fluid. The developer’s account has not posted confirmation of his departure from Turkey, and no official statement has been released by Turkish authorities.
