PayPal and Venmo unveiled global partnerships to bring the world’s largest payment systems and digital wallets on a single platform: PayPal World. This development aims to simplify the process of sending money, shopping online or in-store, and interacting with AI agents across borders.
PayPal said the launch partners initially include India’s NPCI International Payments Limited, which operates the mobile payments framework UPI, and China’s Tenpay Global (Tencent’s Payment arm), which operates Weixin (WeChat) payment ecosystem.
The company also signed an MOU with Latin America’s leading payment system, Mercado Pago. However, the final details of the deals are still being worked out.
“PayPal World is a first-of-its-kind payments ecosystem that will bring together many of the world’s largest payment systems and digital wallets on a single platform,” said Alex Chriss, CEO of PayPal. “We believe the changes we are announcing today have the potential to be a real game changer over time,” he added.
PayPal World will make cross-border payments more seamless, secure, and inclusive for nearly two billion consumers and businesses. This will also ease the payment experience for consumers facing fees, barriers, and delays during international shopping and money transfers.
Interestingly, PayPal and Venmo will become seamlessly interoperable for the first time, enabling users to send money to each other anywhere in the world. Venmo users can now shop both online and in-store at millions of merchants globally that accept PayPal.
PayPal World will expand compatibility with the latest technologies and commerce experiences, including, over time, dynamic payment buttons and stablecoins. Its cloud-native, multi-region deployment architecture ensures low latency and high availability worldwide.
Recently, PayPal expanded partnerships with crypto firms as stablecoins become a more convenient and cost-effective way to make payments. It also partnered with Coinbase to provide fee-free purchasing and selling of PayPal’s stablecoin PYUSD on the crypto exchange.
