To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Ethereum network, the Ethereum community has unveiled an onchain “time capsule” to time-lock memories from the community. The initiative commemorates the 10th anniversary of the network’s genesis block, set for July 30, 2025.
Launched at the Ethereum Community Conference (EthCC), the development of the capsule is supported by the Protocol Guild and Shutter Network. This decentralized initiative invites users across the globe to submit their memories. All these submissinos—such as art, predictions, memes, etc—will be encrypted and preserved securely until the network’s 11th anniversary in 2026.
The time capsule leverages advanced threshold cryptography to ensure privacy and tamper-proof storage. For those willing to send entries, each one would cost approximately 0.001 ETH ($2.50). The funds collected via these proceeds will be directed to the Protocol Guild, a funding framework supporting Ethereum’s core developers.
This dual-purpose project not only celebrates a decade of blockchain innovation since Ethereum’s launch on July 30, 2015, but also reinforces the network’s commitment to decentralized infrastructure.
All the participants can contribute their own diverse content via smart contracts, which will remain sealed using Shutter Network’s threshold encryption protocol. This method distributes decryption keys among multiple parties while ensuring no single entity can access the data prematurely.
On July 30, 2026, the capsules will automatically unlock and reveal a collective snapshot of Ethereum’s global community at this historic juncture.
