Line, the Japanese messaging app with over 196 million active users, will introduce 30 mini-decentralized apps (dapps) on its platform by January 2024, aiming to expand its blockchain ecosystem.
The dapps will include games, social utilities, and DeFi tools, with plans to scale up to 150 dapps by the end of Q1 2024, according to Sam Seo, chairman of the Kaia DLT Foundation. These dapps will operate on the Kaia blockchain.
The move reflects a broader trend of social media platforms embracing blockchain, following the launch of Web3 games on Telegram’s Open Network.
Line’s initiative marks a shift from its previous NFT endeavors, which saw limited success due to complex user experiences. “Games are the biggest portion,” Seo noted, alongside AI-based chatting tools and social dapps.
Line’s approach builds on the popularity of utility-focused integrations seen in platforms like WeChat and Telegram, while addressing challenges from earlier blockchain projects, such as Instagram’s discontinued NFT features. The company also intends to improve user accessibility, transforming dapps from niche tools into mainstream services.
