You Can Store Your Bitcoin Private Key as Colors using BIP39

Bitcoin developer Entero Positivo has recently launched a groundbreaking open-source tool called “BIP39 Colors.” This innovative solution enables users to convert their BIP39 mnemonic phrases, consisting of 12 to 24 words, into visually appealing 8 to 16-color sequences, offering an alternative way to protect and store Bitcoin private keys.

BIP39 Colors translates a BIP39 mnemonic to colors and viceversa.

– You can save each color independently without any order (at home, in css files, png images, …)

The BIP39 standard was established to simplify the process of recovering crypto assets in the event of a crypto wallet device loss. By converting complex private keys into a set of readable words, it allowed users to easily retrieve their funds. However, storing the mnemonic phrase as a list of words could be conspicuous to potential hackers or thieves who come across it.

BIP39Colors aims to solve this issue by transforming mnemonic phrases into colors, which can be hidden in plain sight. Unlike a sheet of paper with a list of words, a color palette labeled as something innocuous, like “my new home wall colors,” or embedded within the code of a website, is less likely to raise suspicion.

The tool generates colors using hex color codes, a six-digit system representing a wide range of colors through combinations of red, blue, and green. These colors can be dispersed across various files, including HTML, CSS, or even within a PNG’s color palette.

Importantly, the order of the colors is not crucial for seed recovery. As long as all the colors are present, users can retrieve their original seed. This flexibility makes it challenging for governments to seize someone’s Bitcoin, as the colors can be distributed among different sources such as family members, web designs, or even books.

Positivo, the developer behind BIP39Colors, provided step-by-step instructions for decoding the BIP39 colors back into the original mnemonic phrase, using only a calculator and eliminating the need for external tools. This simplicity ensures ease of use for users seeking to access their crypto assets securely.

By introducing this unique approach to crypto key concealment, BIP39Colors offers an intriguing solution for individuals looking to enhance the security of their Bitcoin holdings. As cryptocurrencies continue to gain popularity, safeguarding digital assets has become paramount, and this innovative tool opens up new possibilities for protecting mnemonic phrases in a visually discrete manner.
