At the Consensus 2023 festival on Friday, David Maisel, the visionary behind the Marvel Cinematic Universe, drew parallels between the early days of Marvel Studios and the current state of Web3.
Maisel, who recently launched Mythos Studios, which minted the Ekos Genesis Art Collection earlier this month, believes that there is a lot of noise and distraction in our lives, and in order for something new to break through, it needs a visual identity and a primal feeling that art can provide.
The Ekos Genesis Art Collection features original art from Michael Turner and Peter Steigerwald, two late comic book artists known for their work across Marvel and DC comics. Maisel believes that part of the joy of Web3 and digital art is the ability to share it.
“You don’t have to just go to the museum or go to somebody’s home,” he said. “I hope this shows a vote of confidence from someone who hasn’t been in the space. I really want to share this art and the possibilities around it.”
While the NFT market has seen some turbulence over the last six months, Maisel believes that there is still underlying value in art that goes beyond prices.
He says that his passion for Web3 comes from the same seed that was in him for Marvel, and he wouldn’t be able to do it without that same passion.
