Nokia CEO Says 6G Will Arrive by 2030 Amid Industrial Metaverse

According to Pekka Lundmark, President and CEO of telecoms corporation Nokia, 6G networks will arrive in the market around 2030 as the industrial metaverse expands in the tech industry.

Just finished a #wef22 panel on #digital with @Google, @IBM, @HPE, @Accenture. Touched on cybersecurity, edge cloud, 6G, Web 3.0., quantum computing… and that's just a taste. Thanks to @nxthompson for moderating. https://t.co/oal2hAni9W pic.twitter.com/1WXRDrxkes

As per Business Insider report, Pekka Lundmark stated this during the World Economic Forum panel discussion titled ‘Strategic outlook on the digital economy.’

Lundmark noted, “Right now, we’re all building 5G networks, as we know, but by the time quantum computing is maturing for commercial applications, we’re going to be talking about 6G. By then, [2030], definitely the smartphone as we know it today will not anymore be the most common interface.”

Lundmark expects that by 2030, there will be a digital twin of everything requiring huge computational resources. He does believe that the physical world and digital world will evolve together.

Advancing to 6G alongside the metaverse is going to necessitate even more vast computational resources, such as networks thousands times faster than 5G, according to Lundmark.

The true definition of 6G is currently unknown, as the globe is still adjusting to 5G. 5G refers to next-generation mobile networks that promise to support technologies like autonomous cars and virtual reality by providing super-fast data speeds.

Many experts view 6G as a fundamental shift in networks, driven by technological advancements in quantum mechanics and artificial intelligence, rather than just better speeds and reaction times.

Ruth Parlot, Alphabet’s chief financial officer, was also on the panel. People would soon be able to instantaneously translate conversations using augmented reality (AR) glasses, she claimed.

Parlot added “We believe that one of the big advantages of augmented reality is actually solving problems here on Earth. It will be things like having glasses and being able to translate as you speak with glasses. Those are very close.”

During the panel discussion, Pekka Lundmark, Ruth Parlot, and the other tech executives also discussed the metaverse’s prospects and limitations.

In February, a report published by Credit Suisse revealed that the metaverse revolution will hike the average data usage to 20 times around the globe by 2032, and telecom companies are taking advantage of it. A few days back, Indian telecom company, Reliance Jio had tested a metaverse experience for digital retail using its 5G network.
