The Litecoin Foundation and Greywick Digital have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) regarding the creation of cLTC, a version of Litecoin designed for use on the Canton Network.
According to the announcement on October 1, Greywick Digital, described as an asset-agnostic network, will create cLTC. The Litecoin Foundation, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, will support cLTC for institutional trading, yield-bearing products, and other institutional applications on the Canton Network.
cLTC is expected to go live after the official publication of reserve addresses, the attestation format, and the launch sequence. Work on these elements is currently underway through a live testnet.
Litecoin background and institutional use
According to the announcement, Litecoin has operated since 2011 and has processed more than 417 million transactions. It also said more than 77 million of Litecoin’s 84 million hard-capped supply are currently in circulation.
The announcement further described Litecoin as having deep spot-market liquidity and said U.S. regulators, including the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, have recognized Litecoin as a commodity.
It also described Litecoin as MiCA-compliant in the European Union and said the asset is supported by a dedicated spot exchange-traded fund listed on Nasdaq, as well as publicly traded digital asset treasuries in the United States and Canada.
Through cLTC, Litecoin is intended for use within institutional settlement infrastructure. The announcement listed partner organizations that include DTCC, Goldman Sachs, Circle, and BNY Mellon, among others.
cLTC is expected to be live on the Canton Network by the end of 2026.
Recent Canton network developments
In related activity on the Canton Network, World Liberty Financial expanded availability of its USD1 stablecoin to the network on August 25. USD1 is issued natively on Canton and can be used for settlement, collateral, and lending. The integration also supports applications involving tokenized real-world assets, cross-border payments, and other financial activities.
On August 21, Digital Asset, the creator of the Canton Network, and the American Idea Foundation announced a collaboration to support the launch of state RISE pilot benefit distribution programs. RISE stands for Resources for Independence, Stability, and Employment.
Canton is planned to serve as the technology foundation for benefit distribution in the pilots. Subject to federal approvals, the pilots are scheduled to begin across three states in the first quarter of 2027.
On July 1, Tradeweb completed the first real-time on-chain transaction involving a tokenized U.S. Treasury security against tokenized cash (USDCx) on the Canton Network. The transaction was a real-time buy-sell of an on-chain U.S. Treasury against USDCx without reliance on off-ledger cash settlement.
The Memorandum of Understanding between Greywick Digital and the Litecoin Foundation formalizes their planned support for cLTC as a representation of Litecoin on Canton for the stated institutional uses. The mainnet launch remains dependent on the completion and publication of the reserve, attestation, and launch details.
