Ex-girlfriend Claims McAfee Faked his Death in Netflix Doc

In a Netflix documentary, his ex-girlfriend Samantha Herrera revealed that McAfee faked his death and moved to Texas. The documentary “Running with the Devil: The Wild World of John McAfee” is directed by Bafta-winning director Charlie Russell.

The notorious anti-virus software developer John McAfee who was widely reported to have hanged himself inside a Spanish jail in June 2021 while awaiting US extradition on tax evasion charges is still alive. McAfee was also allegedly involved in the pump-and-dump scheme.

In an interview, director Russel said that he began conversations with McAfee about a potential documentary after the tech pioneer went on the run for tax evasion. Recently, CFTC also ended McAfee’s crypto pump-and-dump charges that netted over $23 million.

When asked about Herrera’s claims that McAfee called her after his death, Russell stated that he doesn’t know what he thinks and doesn’t think Herrera does either. He added, “She says it, then she looks at the camera, and I can’t work out whether she thinks it’s real or not.”

The wild and unsettling life of a supposedly dead crypto evangelist has raised so many questions about the sequence of events. Prior to the suicide reports, McAfee has been repeatedly tweeting that if he was found dead in jail, it would not be suicide.

In 2019, he tattooed “$WHACKD” to back up the sentiment. Undoubtedly, his life was chaotic yet controversial. The newly released Netflix biopic is a mix of raw footage and interviews that highlighted McAfee’s troubled life.

In 2012, McAfee suffered a heart attack after which he broke off his relationship with Herrera who told the interviewers that the relationship began when she was 18. He subsequently married Janice Dyson.

McAfee’s widow Janice McAfee denied those claims and tweeted her late husband had indeed passed away. She also wrote, “Oh how I wish this were true but if John were alive I’m pretty sure he would not be hiding out in Texas.”

She also clarified that “Texas is awesome for sure but John was being held in a Spanish prison because of trumped charges against him from the IRS so he would rather choose to hide out in America. That would be silly.
