WNBA’s New York Liberty Announces NFT Collection

Brooklyn-based New York Liberty, a WNBA team, has announced that it is dropping an NFT collection. The collection will drop on May 7, making it the first WNBA team to enter the NFT space.

The collection will drop on the same date as Liberty’s 2022 opening night against the Connecticut Sun. The exclusive collection celebrates the “ongoing cultural explosion of nail art through a unique Liberty-oriented lens”.

The collection will feature 400 NFTs of a video showcasing a rotating nail polish bottle. Each bottle will be of a different color dedicated to the different WNBA teams, and feature a different serial number.

Liberty CEO Keia Clarke said, “NFTs are the future of one-of-a-kind collectibles, and this exclusive drop celebrates the intersection of nail art culture and sports through the lens of the New York Liberty.”

Buyers can mint their NFTs for $50 starting 1 PM EST on May 7. The collection is powered by Polygon. To buy the NFTs, fans need to download a Coinbase wallet, connect it to Liberty’s NFT platform and fund it with Polygon’s token, MATIC.

The team has also come up with an exclusive whitelist. The whitelist is for those who purchase a special ticket for the opening night as well as an NFT bundle in advance. The whitelist participants will be airdropped a free NFT if they submit their wallet addresses before May 1st.

The buyers will be able to resell their NFTs on secondary marketplaces. Liberty will continue to drop NFTs this year as a part of their Nail Art 2022 Collection.

Sports teams have been increasingly releasing NFT collections to connect with fans and develop another source of income. A few weeks ago, Serie A giant AC Milan announced its first ever official NFT project, in collaboration with Fansea and BitMex. A limited-edition 3D NFT of a special Rossoneri jersey from South Sudan was put up on sale from April 14.
