Google has made an investment of $2 billion (RM9.4 billion) in Malaysia to build its first data center and cloud region to meet the increasing demand for AI and cloud services in line with government policies and cybersecurity standards.
The data center will host Google’s digital services such as Search, Maps, and Workspace, while the cloud region will serve both public and private sector clients. Moreover, Google released two AI literacy initiatives for learners and teachers in Malaysia.
These investments are projected to contribute over $3.2 billion to Malaysia’s GDP and generate 26,500 employment opportunities by 2030. Google’s Malaysia cloud region will be among its 40 regions and 121 zones globally.
This announcement follows Microsoft’s recent $2.2 billion investment in Malaysia for cloud and AI infrastructure, which shows that technology giants are looking to capitalize on Southeast Asia’s increasing need for AI and cloud services.
