The state government of Beijing has proposed to integrate China’s controversial social credit system into Metaverse.
As per the reporting by Politico, Beijing’s state owned telecom operator China Mobile, has drafted a proposal to implement Digital Identity System for metaverse users.
The proposal recommends that digital ID should work with users personal data including their natural and social characteristics. It further suggests that the information should be stored permanently and shared with law enforcement agencies for ‘safety of the virtual world.’
China Mobile also outlined an example advantage of this system citing that it would have been beneficial when a user spread rumors in metaverse leading to create severe chaos.
China’s social credit system is an in-development infrastructure that is designed to score citizen’s behavior across various metrics. It has also been a controversial enforcement tool used to block social offenders by the authorities.
This proposal is a part of discussion between China Mobile and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), an agency of the United Nations that sets global standards for telecom technology.
At the ITU, China has been criticized for allegedly promoting a government-controlled version of internet and telecommunication network.
In this emerging space, China has gained significant presence with its major cities amplifying metaverse development. As such, in May this year Nanjing launched a state backed Metaverse Initiative to foster development in this sector.
