Social Media giant Twitter is building a new dedicated crypto team called Twitter Crypto to handle “all things blockchain at Twitter”. Twitter hired Tess Rinearson as the team’s engineering director to define the “strategy for the future of crypto at Twitter.”
Before joining Twitter, Rinearson worked at Tendermint on the Tendermint Core consensus engine and at Interstellar, a software payments firm.
Rinearson announced the move on Twitter with the following message: “First, we’ll be exploring how we can support the growing interest among creators to use decentralized apps to manage virtual goods and currencies and to support their work and communities.”
She further continued by adding, “looking farther ahead, we’ll be exploring how ideas from crypto communities can help us push the boundaries of what’s possible with identity, community, ownership, and more.”
Rinearson further stated that the group would work together with BlueSky to “help shape the future of decentralized social media.”
No wonder that Twitter is getting more serious about cryptocurrency. Users may now send and receive Bitcoin tips, which is a new feature.
CEO Jack Dorsey, notably at Square, has long been an outspoken supporter of the technology. Dorsey’s other business recently revealed that it would develop a Bitcoin hardware wallet. It’s also “thinking about” putting together a Bitcoin mining system.
