The US technology company OpenAI’s chatbot, ChatGPT, experienced an outage today that affected users worldwide. The outage happened after 1:40 PM (IST) on Wednesday. The company quickly identified and resolved the underlying issue.

During the downtime, the platform displayed a message stating, “We are currently experiencing issues.”
The outage was significant, as ChatGPT was unresponsive to users on its main chat feature across web, mobile, and desktop platforms. The affected components included Login, Web, Mobile, WhatsApp, 1-800-CHAT-GPT, Search, Advanced Data Analysis, and Context Connectors.
OpenAI’s system tracker reported that the breakdown also affected the chatbot’s other services, including APIs, image generation, embeddings, and fine-tuning. The problem persisted for two hours and was resolved at 3:53 PM (IST).
As per reports, the outage followed a surge of complaints on Downdetector and social media platforms, where its users have expressed their frustration over stalled academic work, business tasks, and personal projects. Some users highlighted “unusual error” messages, and others were unable to access their chat history.
This event is another recent disruption that has raised worries about ChatGPT’s reliability, even though it’s usually up 99.36% of the time. Following the incident, ChatGPT users had switched to other AI tools like Google Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Perplexity AI, Jasper Chat, and YouChat, which are still working.
ChatGPT Experiences Multiple Global Outages
This incident is not the first time ChatGPT has experienced a global outage. On February 6, 2025, ChatGPT faced a major disruption during the morning hours, resulting in over 1,400 complaints recorded by Downdetector.
Similarly, on June 4, 2024, ChatGPT users encountered widespread issues. Many were unable to access the service, with some facing website accessibility problems while others could not generate responses.
