OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has announced its plans to open its first office in New Delhi, India, later this year. The firm took this initiative because India has the second-largest number of users for its AI chatbot ChatGPT globally, following the United States.
As reported by Reuters, the new office will help OpenAI work closely with the Indian government, developers, businesses, and schools as part of the IndiaAI Mission. The firm aims to create AI tools that are easy, cheaper, and better suited to Indian users.
The US tech giant Microsoft has backed OpenAI, which has formally established an entity in India and is hiring a local team. OpenAI is in the process of augmenting its current workforce in India. At present, the firm has only one employee in India, Pragya Mishra.
OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, told CNBC, “The level of excitement and opportunity for AI in India is incredible. India has all the ingredients to become a global AI leader: amazing tech talent, a world-class developer ecosystem, and strong government support through the IndiaAI Mission.”
He further stated that establishing the first office in New Delhi and forming a local team is a key milestone in OpenAI’s efforts to make advanced AI widely available in India.
He emphasized that this move reflects the company’s dedication to creating AI solutions specifically designed for India, in collaboration with the country’s people and institutions.
The Indian government is pleased about OpenAI’s decision to open an office in New Delhi and supports its plan to expand AI in the country. India’s tech minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, told CNBC that “OpenAI’s decision to establish a presence in India reflects the country’s growing leadership in digital innovation and AI adoption.”
He further added, “As part of the IndiaAI Mission, we are building the ecosystem for trusted and inclusive AI, and we welcome OpenAI’s partnership in advancing this vision to ensure that the benefits of AI reach every citizen.”
At present, the firm is facing tough competition in India from Google’s Gemini and a startup called Perplexity. Both Gemini and Perplexity are offering their advanced AI tools for free to many users in India.
