Polygon’s Heimdall V2 Mainnet Goes Down Due To Consensus Bug

The Polygon blockchain had a short problem on Wednesday when part of its system, called Heimdall V2, experienced a temporary outage. This happened around 9:30 AM UTC and lasted for one hour before services were restored.

The incident was caused by a suspected consensus bug linked to a validator’s exit, according to the Polygon team. The Bor layer, which handles block production and transaction processing, remained fully functional, according to an update from Polygon.

Polygon confirmed that the disruption was isolated to Heimdall V2, which is responsible for communication among validator nodes.

“Block production on the Bor mainnet was uninterrupted throughout the downtime,” said a Polygon spokesperson. The team has confirmed that the network’s block explorers are now resynced and displaying accurate data.

RPC Node Sync Issues Add to Network Hiccups

After Heimdall V2 came back online, Polygon noted that some computers used by RPC providers, which are services that help apps and users connect to the blockchain, were out of sync.

Polygon said it’s working with these partners to fix the issue as soon as possible. “One provider is already back online, with slightly delayed sync,” Polygon said.

The outage did not affect users’ ability to send transactions or produce blocks. The team explained that no funds or data were lost during the issues, and managed to maintain a consistent 24/7 blockchain network for users.

Heimdall V2Upgrade Brought Speed

The Heimdall V2 upgrade went live early this month and introduced major improvements, including faster finality times of around five seconds. It also updated the network’s tech stack with CometBFT and Cosmos-SDK v0.50. However, the upgrade also increased system complexity, making it more sensitive to disruptions.

“This is the most technically complex hard fork Polygon proof-of-stake (PoS) has seen since its launch in 2020,” co-founder Sandeep Nailwal said in a July 8 post on X.

In 2022, a similar problem happened with Heimdall V1, which also caused downtime. Polygon says it is now working to make sure this doesn’t happen again.
