Openai To Launch Its Ai Browser Against Google’s Chrome

OpenAI, a leading artificial intelligence (AI) company, is all set to launch its new web browser that will compete with its rival Google’s Chrome. This new browser will be created on the open-source code Chromium and is expected to be released in the next few weeks.

The browser will utilize AI to enhance the browsing experience. Users will be able to perform tasks such as making reservations and filling out forms directly within the browser, utilizing a ChatGPT-like interface, instead of navigating to different websites. These initiatives could challenge Google’s business as Chrome collects user data to show targeted ads, which makes up most of Google’s income.

OpenAI’s browser might attract some of ChatGPT’s 500 million weekly users, which will put pressure on Chrome. Currently, Chrome is used by over 3 billion people and controls most of the browser market. Apple’s Safari is in second place with 16% of the market. OpenAI aims to incorporate its AI tools, like the Operator agent, into its browser to facilitate everyday tasks.

As per reports, OpenAI aims to build its browser instead of adding features to someone else’s to have more control over user data. However, it faces competition from other AI browsers like Perplexity’s Comet and those from The Browser Company and Brave. The U.S. Department of Justice wants Google to sell Chrome because of its dominance in search, but Google plans to fight this in court.

OpenAI is growing beyond its popular AI chatbot, ChatGPT, which shook up the tech world in 2022. Led by Sam Altman, OpenAI is now competing with big players like Google and a startup called Anthropic. To expand, OpenAI bought a company called io, which makes AI devices, for $6.5 billion in May.

Additionally, they hired two people who were part of the team that helped build Google Chrome, showing they’re serious about creating their web browser. OpenAI refrained from sharing any official comments yet.
