Apple is exploring the use of artificial intelligence models from OpenAI and Anthropic to power a new version of Siri, Bloomberg reported on Monday. The move signals Apple’s growing interest in tapping third-party AI instead of relying only on its in-house technology.
The iPhone maker has reportedly held talks with both companies, asking them to train customized large language models (LLMs) that could run on Apple’s own cloud infrastructure for testing purposes. However, sources say the discussions are still in the early stages and no final decision has been made.
The news gave Apple’s stock a boost, closing 2% higher on Monday. This comes after Apple admitted earlier this year that planned AI improvements to Siri would be delayed until 2026.
In March, Bloomberg reported a leadership shake-up in Apple’s AI division, with Mike Rockwell taking charge of Siri development after CEO Tim Cook lost confidence in former AI head John Giannandrea.
At its recent Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple focused on practical AI updates such as real-time phone call translations. It also announced that developers can now access its internal AI models and will soon have the option to use both Apple’s and OpenAI’s code completion tools in Xcode, its main development platform.
While OpenAI and Apple have remained silent, Amazon-backed Anthropic declined to comment. Apple’s AI future now seems more open literally as it weighs outside help to bring Siri up to speed in the fast-moving AI race.
