Tether’s USDT stablecoin will soon support commission-free transactions on the Tron blockchain, according to Tron founder Justin Sun.

Tron’s new “Gas Free” feature will allow USDT transfers without needing TRX for fees. Sun announced that the feature is expected to launch within a week.

He also invited teams and wallets interested in supporting this feature to reach out to JustLend, Tron’s official lending platform.

Tron was once known for its low-cost USDT transfers, but recently, it has become one of the most expensive networks for USDT transactions.

According to Tether’s GasFeesNow page, TRC-20 USDT transactions currently have the highest fees among all supported blockchains, ranging from $3.20 to $6.50. In comparison, ERC-20 USDT fees are around $0.40.

The page explains that estimating gas fees on Tron can be complicated since TRC-20 USDT transfers require “energy” and “bandwidth.” It also notes that most regular users who send USDT occasionally may not have enough energy in their wallets, leading to higher fees.

Tether data shows that TRC-20 USDT gas fees spiked in late 2024, reaching over $9 per transaction on Dec. 9. The Tron Foundation has been working on gas-free TRC-20 transactions since at least July 2024. Justin Sun initially aimed to launch the feature by Q4 2024, stating that such services could help large companies adopt blockchain-based stablecoin solutions.
