ChatGPT (chatgpt.com) has climbed to the sixth most visited site in the world in January 2025 based on Similarweb statistics. The AI chatbot platform now accounts for 2.33% of global internet traffic and has increased by 5.91% compared to the previous month.
Google is the market leader with 29.21% of the traffic share, while the second is YouTube, which has a 20.40% share. However, the gap is recognized by OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman even though ChatGPT is rapidly growing. He retweeted the ranking with the following comment: “Man, still a long way to go to run down Google.”
The other sites that have made it to the list are Facebook at 5.08%, WhatsApp at 3.15%, Instagram at 2.36%, X at 1.92%, Yahoo at 1.88%, Reddit at 1.62%, and Netflix at 1.60%.
The increase in ChatGPT traffic shows the need for AI tools since more people turn to it for answers, writing help, and information. This means that with further enhancements, it is possible for ChatGPT to rise even more in the following months.
Will it ever be able to pose a threat to Google’s supremacy? That remains to be seen. But for now, it is a great success for OpenAI.
